WHY CHOOSE PLAY THERAPY?
WHAT TO EXPECT
Sessions are normally held at your child's school and last 50 minutes costing £50 each. I am happy to approach your child's school to arrange this. At present I do not have a regular venue that I can offer play therapy sessions outside of school hours but please feel free to contact me as there are some options available depending on your location and availability.
Within the play therapy room there are a number of resources from puppets and instruments to clay and sand. Your child is free to choose what activities they wish to partake in from structured games to imaginary and messy play.
Play Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that works at a child’s own pace. Early childhood experts agree that play is essential and facilitates emotional development, cognitive and decision-making skills as well as social and communication skills.
Play Therapy allows children to act out what is troubling them. It allows them to access the unconscious part of their brain as they’re not ‘thinking’ about what they are doing, just playing it out. New research by Huawei* shows that we are unaware of around 99% of the actual decisions we make each day so opening up an avenue to the unconscious brain allows children to deal with problems that might not be resolved through talking alone. Language is a skill we learn, whereas play is inherent, so children naturally use play as their preferred form of communication making it easier for them to express themselves.
Having someone witness this play can build a sense of self-worth. They learn to trust their instincts and can try out different scenarios, in the playroom, safely without judgements or real-life consequences – as it’s just playing.
